Every four years the World Cup tournament is held, with a different country hosting each time. This time around South Africa has been chosen, 2010 will be the first time the event will be held on African soil.
The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the governing body of soccer, is the sponsor of the World Cup. More than 140 nations are currently FIFA members. The FIFA World Cup was first held in 1930, and has since become the world’s most popular sports event, with the possible exception of the Olympic Games.
16 teams reach the world cup finals in South Africa. Countries that belong to FIFA pick an all-star team from their nation’s best players. These men train together as a unit, and they play regional elimination rounds. Over the past two years, a series of 248 qualification games between 95 countries narrowed the field down to the final 16 teams.
Tens of thousands of fans from outside South Africa are expected to attend the games. Cape Town is currently the hottest spot in South Africa, and is host to group games, and at least 1 semi final.
